Somewhere between a crashed render and a perfectly generated frame, I realized the job was no longer what I thought it was.
The Frame That Didn’t Need Me
It started like all bad revolutions do—quietly, politely, almost helpfully.
A prompt here.
A render there.
A tool that said, “Don’t worry, I’ve got this.”
And suddenly, the timeline—the sacred timeline—felt less like a battlefield and more like a suggestion.
I’ve spent years inside software like Adobe After Effects, dragging keyframes like a man dragging furniture through a narrow corridor, convincing myself that friction was craft. That resistance meant value.
Now I type a sentence and watch a machine hallucinate motion.
Not simulate. Not approximate.
Hallucinate.
And the worst part?
It’s not bad.
The Lie We Told Ourselves About Skill
We thought motion design was about tools.
About knowing how to bend a graph editor into submission. About plugins. About presets. About knowing which button to press when a client says “make it pop.”
But tools don’t define a medium. They never did.
Midjourney didn’t kill illustration.
Runway ML didn’t kill filmmaking.
And whatever comes next won’t kill motion design.
It just exposes something uncomfortable:
Most of what we were doing… wasn’t that deep.
A lot of motion design—especially in the commercial trenches—was factory work dressed up as creativity. We were assembling taste, not inventing it.
AI didn’t break the system.
It just turned the lights on.
The New Primitive: Taste
Here’s the uncomfortable upgrade:
You’re no longer valuable because you can animate.
You’re valuable because you know what should exist.
That’s it.
The machine can generate a thousand variations.
But it doesn’t know which one matters.
It doesn’t know:
- what feels true
- what feels earned
- what feels like it belongs to a brand, a culture, a moment
That’s your job now.
Not execution.
Selection. Direction. Judgment.
The motion designer becomes less like a technician… and more like a film editor of possibilities.
Living Inside the Dystopia (And Finding It Beautiful)
Let’s not pretend this isn’t dystopian.
It is.
The speed is unnatural.
The abundance is overwhelming.
The signal-to-noise ratio is collapsing.
You can generate ten lifetimes of work before breakfast.
And most of it will be meaningless.
But here’s the strange twist:
Meaning becomes more valuable when everything is easy.
When everyone can generate,
only a few can say something worth generating.
That’s the inversion.
Craft Is Not Dead. It Has Mutated.
There’s a myth floating around that AI kills craft.
That’s lazy thinking.
Craft doesn’t disappear. It moves.
Before:
- Craft = keyframes, easing curves, masking precision
Now:
- Craft = prompting language
- Craft = visual systems thinking
- Craft = understanding rhythm across generated + edited media
- Craft = knowing when to stop
The new craft is invisible to amateurs.
It looks like “just typing.”
But underneath, it’s:
- references layered like architecture
- constraints designed like engineering
- taste sharpened like a blade
You’re not animating frames anymore.
You’re designing probability spaces.
The Hope Nobody Talks About
Here’s the part that doesn’t get clicks:
This is the most creative moment in the history of motion design.
Not because of the tools.
Because of the collapse of gatekeeping.
You no longer need:
- a massive render farm
- a huge team
- weeks of production cycles
You need:
- clarity
- perspective
- and the courage to make decisions
That’s it.
A single person with taste can now do what studios used to take months to attempt.
And that changes who gets to participate.
What Motion Designers Become Next
Not obsolete.
Not replaced.
Evolved.
You become:
- a visual strategist instead of a tool operator
- a world builder instead of a frame pusher
- a taste curator instead of a preset collector
You move upstream.
Closer to:
- idea
- narrative
- meaning
Further from:
- mechanical execution
And ironically, closer to what you probably wanted to do in the first place.
The Final Frame
Somewhere between fear and fascination, there’s a quiet realization:
The job was never to animate.
The job was to see.
To see what doesn’t exist yet,
and insist that it should.
AI didn’t take that away.
It just removed all the excuses.
